The time the Jews settled in
In the tenth century AD
according to the stone inscriptions from the synagogue in
during the reign of Emperor Song Huizong (1100-1126 AD), a group of Jews,
to escape the persecution of
along the
which is today’s
Upon the arrival of those Jews, the local Chinese
presented their great hospitality
The emperor even attended the welcome banquet
And received some of their representatives
Seeing those foreigners with big noses, deep eyes and strange costumes
also with small blue hat, speaking a funny dialect
the emperor raised his brush pen and turned out a poem
Various states, under the same sky; different peoples, belong to one family
We all are brothers and sisters, why use a strange language?
The six-point stars over the arch
The old cracks on the white window pillar
The mascot hung from the brown door frame
The afternoon sun throws a pool of light through the green leaves
Shanghai in July, like a humid and baking river
There is a synagogue standing tranquilly
Maybe few knows,
there are many buildings like this in some Chinese cities.
Maybe fewer know the stories behind those buildings
Today,
and the most complete Jews’ cemetery-Huangshan Jewish Cemetery
In the past, those who lived and worked in
the Jewish bankers, writers and artists, more than 600 persons
now rest in peace here
Those tombstones with Jewish names
together with thousands of Chinese’ tombstones
lying in neighbor silently
The grandfather of Israeli Prime Minister
was buried here in
